Good. What you call "Computer Desktop" is actually the sum
of the files in your own profile folder plus the "All Users"
profile folder.

This is incorrect. The files you create on your desktop will be stored
in your own profile folder, not in the "All Users" profile folder
(unless you manually copy them there).

I agree.

I do not agree. Any shortcut you create on your desktop will be
stored in your own profile folder, not in the "All Users" profile folder.

So.... any clue how to resolve the problem?

You need to restate the problem in the light of our discussion so far.

Hi roni
I'm wondering if you really are logged in to the profile you think you
are using. If there has been a glitch at some point XP sometimes creates
a new profile with a very similar name. For instance, if your original
profile was called Roni, there might now be a second account called
Roni.computername or similar.
This could explain why, when you create a file or folder in what you
think is your user profile, it doesn't appear on the computer desktop.
If you click on Start, then run, and type %userprofile% then click OK,
where does it take you? While you're looking at the profile folder, open
Desktop and create a new folder. Does it appear on your desktop now?

Typing %userprofile% will take me to C:\Documents and Settings\rsegoly
as expected, I am logged in as rsegoly.
In any case the problem is different, as when I create file on my
desktop it does not appear on any profile folder but on all users one.
I just noticed another related issue.
I have another user called roni, when I log as roni and create file on
desktop, I see it on user profile folder as expected, but for roni the
all users desktop folder will be
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
While for the problematic user (which is the main one I use) the all
users desktop folder will be
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Desktop
Maybe it gives some clue, it is as if some environment definition are
changed for this particular user

I suspect a corrupted profile. Reboot the machine, log on as
Administrator, then rename the suspect profile folder to
something such as "JSmith.bad". Now log on as JSmith
so that Windows creates a new profile.

Resolved now, I recreated the profile.
Thanks
