since installing SP3  in XP Pro, when I shut down I now get an update
shield in the shutdown window that says it will install the latest
updates in the shut down window; how to get rid of that?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
