Can't Log On

I have Windows XP Home SP 3. There are two user accounts on my computer: one Administrator and one Limited.

Say I'm working in the Limited account. I decide to log off, which returns me to the Welcome screen. Now I try to log on to my Administrator account - but I can't, because there's no cursor in the white box where I type my password. Clicking inside the white box does not help. Still no cursor. I can't enter my password. Keyboard key presses do not register. I can't log back on to my Limited account either because there, too, I can't enter my password. The only way to get into either of my accounts is to restart the computer.

How can I fix this?

Thanks for your help.

Maybe one of these.. a bit of a stretch:

Several dialog boxes are blank:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430

Transparent drop-down Menu and disappearing menu text -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/transmenu.htm

"About" box is completely blank; Unable to type in text boxes in websites:
http://www.winxptutor.com/ieabout.htm

Also scroll down to the "Logon" section here.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_l.htm

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK.  If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced.  You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.

A couple suggestions I found with a Google Search:

"The problem is with Service Pack KB923191. If you uninstall it the
problem will be fixed."

"MS security update: Kb923191 is to blame. It came with a batch of
updates sometime in 2006. If you remove it the problem will go away. It
may be that your computer will be less secure as a result. I don't know.
Personally I was so fed up with having to press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice to
login that I was prepared to take the risk.
Start - Control panel - add or remove programs (tick the "Show updates"
box at the top). You should be able to see Kb923191 in the list.
Uninstall it and don't forget not to re-install it the next time you do
a windows update! Maybe MS will replace it with a bug-free version
sometime - but don't hold your breath."

I've got the same thing happening intermittently on one of my computers. I've
yet to come across a permanent solution.

There is a workaround you can use instead of having to restart your computer.
The next time this happens, at the Welcome screen hit the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys
twice. This should bring up the Logon to Windows dialog box. Enter the user name
and password of the other account. An alternative approach would be to go into
Control Panel -> User Accounts and clicking on "Change the way users log on or
off". On the next screen you can uncheck the Welcome screen and hit Apply
Options. Now when you log off, you'll see the Logon to Windows dialog box
instead of the Welcome screen.

Good luck

[I'm replying from another computer, so sorry if this looks a little
different.]

I have since discovered that this is a known issue, for which the workaround
is as you have described.

The issue is explained here:

"You cannot type your password in the "Welcome" logon screen in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917556/en-us

I'm basically okay with this. I mean, a real solution would be great, but I
understand that sometimes seemingly minor issues are actually more
complicated than one would believe. At least I know there's nothing wrong
with my computer.

Thanks for your help.
