Okay, this is an easy one..... Windows Updates gives the famous 0x800A0046 error So I go and start the process of stopping the windows update services through CMD First one : net stop wuauserv System Error 5 Access is denied Anyone? I suspect you have some corrupted data in the registry key that controls the Automatic Update facility, or that the permissions on that key are too restrictive. What data is corrupted I have no way of knowing - here is the key as I found it on my own machine. I suggest you export your own key in NT4 format, then use fc.exe to compare your file with the data below.
