Not sure why you mention "w/out SP3", but okay...

Tried methods 1&2 of:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Ignore the title of the article.  The methods have fixed issues with Windows
Update/Automatic Update many times over for the last year+...

Let us know!

thanks for the quick reply to my (poorly typed ) message.....

what happened was the AU options were greyed out...so I turned them back on
in GPedit (have done this many times with various machines).  All seemed
good.  but then i  noticed i had not received update for SP3, AND i thought
that  it should have happened automatically...BUT appears i am wrong..???  i
read elswhere on forum that SP3 autoupdates will arrive in summer???

anyway, how can i check that AU is tunning OK...isn't it wuauclt /detectnow
??? then review the log?? (although i am not sure what to look for in the
log...)

many thanks

Have you verified the "Automatic Updates" service is running?
