Windows Movie Maker has some severe functionality problems.  it
doesn't work.
all glitz and no functionality.
1. I tried to import a converted mpeg file, converted by any-video-
converter in MPEG-II format. first progress bar got to 100%. second
progress bar never started. Program was hung.  it does this
consistently with that video.
2. I tried to import a Dell Experience video  (Mpeg) that came with my
computer.  it imported.  dragged all 6 parts into the timeline (why 6
parts?). read the help on how to trim a clip.  so I tried to trim the
left side of the first clip. I got as far as dragging over 1 frame and
I got a wait cursor. permamently.  program had hung. when I closed it
this time it actually generated an error report.

how did this program get out of QA?

"Supported file types
You can add content to your Windows Movie Maker project either by
capturing content directly in Windows Movie Maker or by importing
existing digital media files. The content you capture in Windows Movie
Maker is saved in Windows Media Format. However, you can also import
existing Windows Media-based content as well as other common file
formats.

You can import files with the following file name extensions into
Windows Movie Maker to use in your project:

Audio
files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav,
and .wma
Picture
files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff,
and .wmf
Video
files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm,
and .wmv "

First, there is a newsgroup specifically for WMM:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker

Second, here is an authoritative web page that will tell you why you should not
use WMM for MPEG-2 files:
