Like XP Home, XP Media Center Edition does not support joining a domain.
Do you actually have a network with a server running as a domain controller?

Yes we do have a dedicated domain controller, but wht is baffling me i
the fact that this computer was running on our network last week unti
it crashed , it was then recovered and now will not join a domain

Officially this isn't anywhere near supported, but there are apparently some
registry modifications that can allow MCE to join a domain. It's possible
that the system had these modifications, of course they do not apply to the
restored version, and everyone's forgotten about having performed them.
Have a look here. You need an XP Boot CD or a BartPE disk or equivalent for
this:

Because WinXP MCE is specifically designed *not* to be able to join a
domain, you'd have to downgrade the OS to WinXP Pro.
