What virus programs, spyware and other trash did you have installed?

Did you try uninstalling SP3?

What makes you think SP3 caused the problem and not virus programs, or
something else? Fire wall?

Well the computer worked before SP3 was installed and didn't afterwards.
It has problems and I'm going to track them down. However I feel that
will require a level of expertise not available here.

Thanks for that.
I now have the graphics card installed thanks to someone in another
newsgroup and the computer doesn't crash anywhere as frequently as it
used to.
My only trouble now is several services set to automatic are not
starting like they should at boot time.
These services include DHCP, Print Spooler and AVG Email Scanner and
probably several others I am unaware of at the moment.
Does anyone know what might stop those services from starting as normal
and how I can fix them?.
Regards
Bill

Try getting rid of AVG. Reinstall SP3 WITHOUT AVG.

Why should I do that? Are you just guessing now? There doesn't seem to
be many experts in this group. You didn't even try to answer my
question for a start. Do you get a kick out of giving people crap
advice?

Thank you for that. I got none of the errors or problems listed in that
article. SP3 installed fine but it was only at reboot that the system
would not start and neither would safe mode.
But that is now immaterial. I have no further desire to upgrade to SP3
for the time being. I reinstalled my XP with SP1 and then put SP2 over
the top of it. This was how it was before I installed SP3 and since I
wasn't running Ghost (a mistake I intend to rectify) I couldn't restore
the previous "good" system.
Now I have an SP2 system that behaves in a way it never used to.
Several services don't start at boot-up. DHCP, Print Spooler and AVG
Email scanner all need to be started manually even when they are set to
automatic. After that I have a working system the way it used to work.
It would be nice if there was a hotfix to get these services to turn on
automatically.
I have been checking out the SP2 literature. That offers more hope of a
solution than documents concerning SP3.

Wow! You certainly are psychotic. Keep your problem, ignore all the advice
you get here. Why are you asking for it?

I thought I had made it clear ... but more than likely I did not ...
that after my experience with SP3 all I wanted to do was go back to a
working SP2 system and leave well enough alone.
Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

The most important first step before doing _any_ big change is,
quoting the Microsoft instructions in the link in the posting I'm
responding to:
We recommend that you perform a full backup of the files that you have
on your computer to an external location, such as an external hard disk,
DVD, CD, USB flash drive, or network folder.
I use Acronis True Image, and have had several occasions to do
a restore (for reasons having nothing to do with installing SP3).
It's saved my gonads several times, and has never let me down.
Usually if sp3 fails its as a result of drivers that are currently installed
