Roy - 28 May 2008 10:31 GMT Hi all. I'm using XP Home on a laptop. I don't know how I managed it but I have managed to put a "startup" folder on my desktop. (not a short cut to it.)
The original is still in Start / Programs /
Under properties the location name is "my name etc"
The one on the desktop is "all users"
How can I remove the folder from the desktop?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Roy

Roy - 28 May 2008 10:50 GMT Hi, thanks for the reply.
It will not let me do this, telling me that it is a Windows system folder & is required etc.

Can you delete it that way?

Click Start / Run / cmd{OK} 2. Type these commands ***verbatim*** dir /s dir "%allusersprofile%\..\startup.*" > c:\test.txt{Enter} notepad c:\test.txt{Enter} 3. Post the contents of the file you see on the screen.

As you reported, you do have a Startup folder on your desktop. I would now do this: - Reboot the machine - Log on as Administrator - Start a Command Prompt - Type this command: move "C:\Documents and Settings\Sue Squires\Desktop" C:\ - Log on as "Sue Squires" - Examine the contents of C:\Desktop - Delete C:\Desktop if it contains nothing important and if Sue's environment appears intact.
Roy - 30 May 2008 10:01 GMT Hi again Pegasus, That removed about 6 icons from the desktop leaving only Internet Explorer & the startup folder! What next, or could I have done it wrong? I did a system restore & tried a second time with the same reults.

Pegasus (MVP) - 30 May 2008 10:21 GMT It appears that some links on your PC are badly disturbed. Which ones they are I do not know and I am very surprised that System Restore did not fix the problem. Are you sure you went back far enough?
I can think of two easy options:
a) Reverse the recipe I gave you in my previous reply, then live with the unwanted folder. b) Create a new user account, configure it and copy all your data files across.

Roy - 30 May 2008 14:14 GMT OK Pegasus, I think the "create a new account" is the best option. Many thanks for your time & patience anyway. Regards, Roy.
