I cant even boot into safe mode. if i leave the computer on it eventually
opens up after an hour or so

Once it loads Windows, does it run OK? No crashing, no freezing?

Sounds like a hardware issue.
First check to see if the drive is in PIO mode. MVP Hans-Georg Michna has an
explanation and fix here: http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10
Otherwise possibly your hard drive (and/or other hardware components) is
dying. You can try hardware troubleshooting or take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).

Or if the computer is still under warranty, contact Compaq/HP tech support
for repair/replacement.
