Whenever MS Word opens on my pc (WinXPpro and MSOffice pro) it runs a 'virus
search', even when I open my pc with my anti-virus software not open!  Is
there any way to turn this off?  I haven't noticed such an event on any other
computer I've worked at ,so I don't even know where this feature came from.
Thanks, Richard

Please define what you mean by "it runs a 'virus search".

Exact text of messages or dialogues would help.

The feature is set in the antivirus you are using. There is an option to
scan Office documents. You'll need to open the antivirus program and look
in its options/preferences and disable this.

That's what I thought, but it continues to happen even when my anti-virus
program (AVG7.5) is not even loaded!  I even removed it from 'startup' (along
with Zonealarm) but it still happens.  Anything else you can think of that I
have to do to get rid of this feature?

You might try running Process Explorer (free download) and invoke it during
the rogue viris scan. It might tell you the name of the culprit program.

But, did you disable the feature in AVG?
