Windows updates wreck display settings

Everytime I download the latest windows update my display settings go to
default: the display sets to the  lowest resolution and all of my icons move
from their original position. It is as if the computer boots into safe mode,
(but the display does not indicate that specifically)

I have tried saving the desktop theme to no avail.

Each time I must reset all of the font sizes, re-arrange the icons and reset
the resolution. sometimes I must reboot 4 of 5 times to get it back to
normal.  - if I simply reboot under normal conditions, this problem does not
occur.

What is causing this?

Are you updating drivers?

Try downloading and installing the drivers for your video card from the card
manufacture's web site.
Never use any driver updates available from MS Windows Update!

Don't install driver updates offered by Windows Update.
