Can someone give me a quick overview of the "Temporary" Internet Files (that stick around for years) and sub-directories that are safe to delete? What do filenames such as "[20]" refer to? Can all those just be dumped without consequences? If not, why are they "temporary"?

I am using Firefox as my default browser (less crashes)...but of course one need access to IE for things like Active X programs. How do I get my IE shortcuts (which now open in Firefox) to open back in IE when necessary? Marcus

The problem is on my wife's system, Win XP Home, SP2. Internet connected to a cable modem. Recently, when she opens IE 6.xx, the internet connection is dog slow. When she types into the address bar, it takes at least 6 or 7 seconds for each letter to appear.
