When trying to install XP with SP1a on Virtual PC 2004, setup crashes with
the stop error 0x0000008e right after the screen where you can select
whether to install a new copy of the OS or repair an existing one.
I'm using default settings for the virtual machine, with two exceptions ...

I keep getting not enough memory on the host when trying
to set up a vpc with 512mb ram. I have 2gb on the host
with nothing running except xp.

gives me an error indicating I need to create a bootable
non-NTFS partition on the drive.
