I recently copied some files from my old Win98 PC onto a my new WinXP PC, but
I cannot open any of the files (doc/jpg/txt etc.) it just says 'Invalid file
format' or 'file not recognized'.
I've tried copying via floppy, mem stick, and putting the drive as a slave

slave or secondary master (yes it's jumpered right; AFAIK) it shows on one

I have seem to lost my windows 98 product key numbers.  
Is there any way I can get these numbers.  Or is there a
way that I can get general numbers that work on all the

   Mystery problem with Compaq Presario 1060 Laptop.
   Note: I service TVs, etc.,  rarely service a computer.
   PROBLEM (Hard Disk Drive is fine):
   On the same day (no storm and it wasn't dropped) this laptop

I have installed a new 80GB HDD (recognized as Drive G:) onto which I have
cloned the OS from Drive C:. However when restarting the PC, the machine
will only boot if I leave the original C: in the system.
The new disk still has the drive letter G: assigned to it. I have used both

   Note: I cleaned both drives, floppy & CD, (Compaq Presario 1060 laptop
yr 1997) but problem remains.  I used a "lab" type of power supply as
substitute for latpop's external power supply.  Also, see original post below.
   More tests made since my original post exposed ...

    The floppy drive, part # 261848-001, in my 1997 (abt.) Compaq Presario
1060 laptop is bad and there is no replacement available.  Note: I service
TVs, etc., rarely computers.   I have a floppy drive from another model Compaq
laptop, not the same part number, but it could fit in ...
