I recently won a new computer that had everything deleted
off of it.  It is a Dell GX1.  I used to have a Gateway
and had all the discs for that.  I received no new discs
with the Dell.  Do I have to purchase an all new windows

I cannot figure out what is wrong, windows98 se will not
open, not from normal boot, not in safe mode. I can get my
A: and C: prompts and I can open directories one after the
other, I can even open an Edit window, and run ScanDisk.

to be a sticker on the computer that has it but its not

Looks like it's getting harder to avoid upgrading to DirectX9 from 8.1b. I
approach such updates with reservation given the lack of any provided
un-install. I'm trying to find the easiest most straight forward way of
recovering from the update if there's problems, e.g. directx ...

mode.  List, and icon modes are fine.

I burned a CD some time ago and pretty well trashed it in the process. Now I've acquired a
data recovery program that works -- not too bad I guess.  Problem: it's like when you do a
scandisk and it offers to convert lost clusters into files. They all look the same and
