How do I open the "connected to the internet icon"?

On the occasions that scandisk operates automatically
following an incorrect shut-down, a message
appears "Invalid long filename entry on drive. To fix run
Scandisk from Windows"

The last couple of weeks I click on Update Manager then update and nothing
happens. The last update I managed to get took about 10 attempts over a
couple of days. Any one else experiencing this?

Ok this is the messege I get when starting my computer:
Cannot find device file that maybe needed to run windows or

I have a new computer. I want to format the hard drive on my old computer ,
so I can re-install win/98 for my daughter.
How can I do this & what precautions should I take before doing this?

For some reason I occasionally lose a Font from Windows 98
but I can get it back by reinstalling Windows 98SE again.
This procedure takes time and I wish to know if there is a
quicker way of reinstalling just the Fonts from the Windows

I checked the procedures recommended in this group, and after I disabled the
Windows exit sound file, shut down seemed ok (fingers crossed).
