Rinstalling 98 on old laptop24 Mar 2004 02:16 GMT2
Hello, I have an old Acer laptop running Windows 98 and
need to do a reinstall.  My only problem is how? Ther is
no cd-rom drive, or usb port.  Just a floppy, serial,
parallel, and two pcmcia slots.  Any comments would be

PC with Windows 95 developed a space bar problem.  
Replaced 3 keyboards still does not work.  Upgraded to
Windows 98 and still does not work.  Moved user apps and
data to another Win98 machine and now it does not work.

My system has developed a misterious fault.
When trying to boot, the machine screen displays a message: Error while
loading IOS. Cannot alocate real mode memory, and the machine freezes. This
happens when I have 512Mb of memory installed. When I remove one memory

my windows 98 SE german version doesn't support cyrillic
codes. what should i do? can i download those from
somewhere? please help, it is really urgent!! :-) thanks

Daughter was fussing at me for having "so much stuff" on my
computer.  So, I went to add/remove programs and removed
msmouse... the one that came with my computer is long gone
and I've installed my Logitech mouse with the CD that came

i'm not sure if this has to do with the settings in
Windows 98 or Office 97, but when i have multiple excel
(or any ms office) files open at the same time, i will
have only the 1 active excel window being displayed on my

Here's the First Mystery:
I installed an app called FolderStyle - it lets you change folder icons.
With it I changed a plain yellow folder icon on my Desktop to a blue folder.
It created the following desktop.ini file in that folder:

when i run McAfee shredder it stops because "programs are still running
in background".
This even after i have shut down the icons ( right click "end" )
that are on the bottom right side of desk top.

I don't know how this plug-in toolbar got on both of these
MS-windows standard applications, but I want it gone and
can't find out how to do it. I suspect it is going out and
pulling up some nasty porn pictures every now and again.

--Is MK9805 the problem?  Is it related to 'HotKey' steup?

Just today I noticed that the 'new' option in the context menu in Windows Explorer (right click on empty desktop) which opens a submenu where you can create new folders etc. has disappeared. I changed nothing and am completely clueless. Any suggestions?

to shutdown/restart without turning the computer off.

i often get a message when on the internet that EXPLORER
has performed an illeagal operation.  this happens quite
often and was wondering what i should do.
