Have a 40Gb hard drive but windows only recognising 6.5GB and now says that the memory is full. Friends say I have to reboot everything again. Any suggestions please?

My PC only boots to the C prompt in DOS. I try safe mode, selective start up etc but although the opening "WINDOWS 98" screen appears, in every case Windows does not load. The C drive is okay as I can navigate in DOS I am guessing

Is there a way to totally get rid of Windows Media Player? Or does Win98SE need it for some reason. I had WMP9 with it's update and security patch. But anytime this system gets any malware installed on it.
