Unable to get out of Safe Mode14 Apr 2004 04:14 GMT1
Laptop rebooted itself this morning for no reason and
came back on Safe Mode. Tried all the measures to get
out. Any new tricks out there?

When I turned on my computer on Saturday (4/11) it went
into safe mode.  I ran a defragmentation and on Sunday it
came back in regular mode but my display had changed from
256 colors to 16 and not start up opens every time I start

I installed Norton System Works 2003 on a W98SE PC and now the subject line
occurs every time that the PC attempts to reboot.  Fails in Safe Mode also.
Is there a way to find and fix the problem?

I have been using Norton Systems Works for over a year and
every week it scans my computer and reports problems. the
problems have always been with shortcuts and NSW fixes
them.  However, this week I got a message that there is a

Using the recovery disk that came with my computer, I
successfully installed w98se to my new primary hard drive
according to the message that appeared on the screen.
After shutting-down then booting the computer, the message

where x: = any OTHER drive. Have searched the registry and the .ini

I have been struggling with my Windows 98 computer for
several days.  I hope someone can help.  Here are the
symptoms:  
Sometimes it hangs up when booting on the MSDOS screen.

I have a gateway 350mhz with 320M ram with win98.  Got a
virus, eliminated that with Norton.  Now when I boot the
machine it acts like windows is starting, but then goes
back to the dos prompt.  I cannot get windows to boot in

  Am trying to get the patch mentioned in KB290831, which
has to do with shutting down .mpd SCSI-type drivers, and
for which there is apparently no available selection at
the download page, etc.  Having noticed that someone said,

Does anyone have a copy of this update?  The KB refers me
to MS support, but the page mechanism drops out when I
give it my Win98SE OEM number, presumeably because they
don't support OEM versions.
