Temp Directory No Longer Being Used21 Jun 2004 22:03 GMT4
All of a sudden, all of my temp files have been placed in the root
windows directory. I never had a variable setting in autoexec to begin
with and before a couple days ago, all print spools, installs etc that
used the temp directory got deposited in windows\temp. Now they are

I have a thompson speedtouch modem that is ok...everything
works fine except i cannot boot past the dos screen with
the thing plugged in...if i unplug it and let it boot and
then plug it back at the splash screen..all is well...its

In Windows Explorer, I have two file folders on my C
drive, one of which is within the Windows folder. Each is
titled 'Windows Update Setup Files' and each contains a
large number of zipped files, presumably from my updating

Every time I boot up my display is at 640x480, my colors
are set to 16 and my mouse is not visible.  Tried changing
the settings but they are lost when I boot up again.  My
mouse is visible in Safe Mode.  Everything seemed ok in

   I think I recall reading someone posting that the /MBR switch on FDISK
not only rewrites the master boot record, but also wipes out partition table
data, so that if you use /MBR on a disk with multiple partitions on it, you
lose the partition data.  Is this true?

Seems I remember there was a URL to go to to find out if your hardware
and software was XP compatible.  Anyone remember the URL please?  I
tried Google and couldn't find it.

In MS config there is the selectable option "System Tray" (SysTray.Exe).
Whether it's selected or not seems to make no difference in the operation or
performance of my computer (that I could discern, at least). Should this
feature be enabled, or does it matter?

All the icons:  Network, Printer, Display, etc. will
launch on a double click.   Shutdown has the same thing.  
Cntl Alt Del -> shutdown does shut it down.
