I have installed driver software for Win98 for an MP3 player (USB mass storage device). When I attach the player, nothing happens and Device Manager gives Error Code 10 - "This device is either not present, not working

The defrag stops at 10% and starts over. I have already changed the system configuration and ran a disk clean up and scan disk. I have tried to run it in safe mode. Nothing seems to be working to make the defrag run. Any suggestions?
