The spool32 and ddhelp files come on when needed. What are these and can I safely turn them off. Using a process explorer the spool32 file has a high priority,thus using cpu time.

It appears that several software programs have become corrupted. Viewing the files in Windows Explorer, all of the subdirectories are labeled with random characters like: #|XbgH*^ or 9Trg!`> or )-kUXyw. I cannot delete

Yes that was the file. I just told windows it was fine as I read that was common for that to be picked up afterwards. I guess I could give it a go though but I always get confused with extracting a file from somewhere. I will follow your instructions and see what happens :)

I noted in a thread about USB 2.0 _hubs_ that Win98SE is a "bare minimum" for supporting USB 2.0. Would that advice differ for a USB 2.0 _card_? Unlike the querier in that thread, I really would like to take

I'm not sure but I have opened up the box thingy before to replace the cd rom and fit more ram so I will have a look. An easier option may be just to hassle the manufacturer as I found them very helpful. The pc is a 3 year old (roughly) compaq deskpro.(yukky beige colour!!) ...

My pentuim II sometimes doesn't start properly and stops in booting just in between. I have to restart it manualy and then I am prompted to start windows in different modes with safe mode selected with default. help needed, thanks a lot.
