I have no sound only when dialing out

on boot up get insufient memory, just started to get it
about 1 month ago. put in more memory and message still
comes up on boot up with black screen. i just press enter
and it completes boot up and runs ok.

I am asking this for a friend who is at a loss trying to
find an answer or what to check to solve this problem.
At various times, and for no apparent reason, his computer
freezes up and stops working for anywhere from 5 seconds
