Could you please tell me what are the required programs for Win98SE to run
at startup (the minimum)
Also in task manager (Cntr-Alt-Del) and in Startup tab in Msconfig.

When my computer freezes, I shut down manually with the
power button.  When I turn the computer on again, the
yellow strip across the bottom of the screen no longer
appears, checking the drive for errors because of improper

I am running some communication software which reads/writes files and
transfers them through the internet in very small bursts.  If I open an
MS-DOS prompt and give it focus, my communications program slows to a snails
pace.  A file transfer which normally takes 6 seconds becomes 30 ...

For past several days I have noticed when I turn on my
notebook (Win98se), every so often, the phrase comes on
the screen: "Please wait while Setup updates the
configuration files.." (I believe that is the wording.)

My computer is an IBM PC 300PL Win 98se os, 500 mhrtz pIII  processor
with 576 mb ram. It has 3 memory slots. It came with 2 64mb sticks of
memory. I bought 2 256 sticks. I have put  64, 256, 256 respectively
into slots 1, 2 and 3. When I boot up memory checks out ok. When I

I am running WinXP Home and lately, it is taking about 45 seconds for Word
to start.
Other Office apps start fine, and I did a repair, which didn't help.
I have current virus protection and have run the latest copies of Ad-Aware

I have tried to use my emergency boot disc and have had no
luck.... is there anyway I can extract files before
replacing bad hard drive.... i have bad sectors when
scandisk runs....  How do you get bad sectors? Can you fix

I have a toshiba notebook computer( about 2 years old)
I have a pcmcia card install that have two
usb2 outputs. (the card bus is 32-bits)

I have found an unknown program that is called 7akq.exe.  
I don't know where it came from and if I don't
ctrl+alt+del and end it, it slows down my computer and
keeps the windows task bar from working.  Can anyone help?

How can I access the files that appear on the Startup tab
