About a week ago my old Dell Precision 486 slowed down to
the point where the thorough ScanDisk now takes me around
24 hrs. to complete - defrag about half that time. To
bring up the desktop at start-up takes probably 10

Can anyone advise why when I shut down from the start menu
windows will not shut down completley.  It seems part of
my CPU shuts down but I still have to press and hold the
power button until it completley shuts down.

still having some trouble with low system resources and
want to revamp my start up. I am unsure as to what
programs are not necessary for start up and which items i
can remove from the list...anyone help pls???

I have done as instructed in the
knowledge base but at the point of this recomadadition:

Can anyone advise the best method for clearing space in
Drive E(System Save)?  I only have 224MB left and I think
it may be causing some problems. I tried to compress it
but am being alerted 'Drive E cannot be compressed because

What's the story on the C:\temp folder? It has gotten quite large on my
computer over the years. What is it good for?
I used Find here, and retrieved the recent forum discussion about deleting
the contents of the C:\Windows\TEMP folder, but nothing about C:\temp

Hello, I am a novice computer person trying to learn from
the beginning and i am comeing across a little problem. my
computer runs win98 and it will boot to the desktop. but
after all pgmseem to load a window called untitled paint

trying to speed up win98 se...system res are low 55% and
cant fingure out why..I dont have a lot of programs..i do
have a firewall and norton but have never had the
resources so low...any ideas?

Sorry this has probably been asked heaps of times and I have tried to search
for it on line to no avail.
My aunty is running Win98 and every time she starts her computer it comes up

Over the past few weeks, the performance of my computer
has become progressively worse, to the point where I get
error messages about not having enough memory and am
forced to reboot just a few minutes after starting
