Looking for help with this device. First question: What is it? Second

I have an old UMAX 1220P scanner that I wanted to install on W98SE.
After I installed from the manufac's CD, my system will not boot!
It crashes very early in the boot process, after telling my it cannot
use or cannot find vmm32.vxd.

I seem to have performance degradation so I bring up the
system monitor and sure enough, there's something taking a
constant 50% of the machine.  Curiously, wintop.exe shows
nothing.  Mouse activity causes usage to dip (weird).  

A colleague is running a PIII 500 PC with 320MB RAM on an IDE hard drive,
Win98se & all the updates.  She's found that when typing (either in Word or
OE6; not sure whether this happens in other apps), the machine will hang for
a short while, then change to allow the mouse to move ...

recently installed mcafee, after dumping norton, but a month into new
subscription...have sticky cursor and other delay issues...a little
help...please?!?!?!

I have a new ADOMAX Wheel Mouse (PS/2) and no matter what I try to
change,  the mouse insists on reacting to a single stroke on the left
mouse button as a double click.  This only happens on W98 - not WXP
(with same mouse).

is it possible to install W98SE OEM onto a motherboard
with a built on SATA contoller so that the one SATA HD
is formated and used as drive C:?

Suddenly my task bar has disappeared,  The desktop and its icons fill
the screen top to bottom.
What could have caused this?  And how can I get it back?
Also - the big word 'Mute' is permanently displayed on the desktop

Alright ... here's the deal. Our Win98-powered Sony VIAO

get prompt saying The File Polall1r.exe cannot be found. Please insert CAB

Hi: I removed a software program which had put two start up which I
previously disabled in Systems Configuration Utility - Startup. Those start
up programs are still listed there. I had thought one could delete them from
Regedit as they used to be listed under RunOnce or a similar ...

I've recently installed WinTop in my Win98 System. It's fine, but there is
not a column showing the memory used by each process. Although I can right
click each process to find this information, it isn't as useful as having

Windows 98 is hanging on shutdown.  Searching the 'net, I found this to be a
recurring problem and tried disabling fast shutdown, but this did not care
for the problem.  Any other ideas?
Some other info:  When I shut down after booting in safe mode, it shuts down
