can i upgrade to xp by just putting in the disk from xp?

Suddenly my CD RW doesn't show up in the device manager.  
It only list a CD Rom not the brand and type that I have
installed.  I have a driver floppy that came with the
drive but I can't get it to install.  How do I get it to
