Running Windows ME, how do I boot up in safe mode?

I've been trying to upgrade from Windows ME to XP
professional. "cannot copy the file clippit.acs" keeps
coming up during the file copy stage of setup. I changed
the source CD thinking it may be corrupt but the same

recently purchased full version of XP home on my P3,
