I just downloaded windows media player 9.0. When I try to start the player it says "an internal application error has occurred". Why does it do that and how can I fix it?

I just upgraded my windows media player to version 9 onto Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, and the error message comes up saying "Windows media has encounted an uknown error" Error Code C00D11B1. Can anyone help out with this error?
