Using Media Player 9 on XP Pro when I try to connect to

I get an error dialog with the message, "Windows Media Player cannot
play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. In the

When I turn my computer on, my Windows Media Player 9 starts automatically. I do not want the Media Player to start automatically. How do I stop it from happening? I've looked everywhere and I cannot locate anything about it.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

click on a link, I get no audio.  The Java console in Firefox brower says
