Elevated privileges for MSI Package in Vista.13 Jan 2007 14:07 GMT2
Hi,
How does one build in Vista a MSI package with elevated privilege such
that UAC dialog pops up asking for user consent to proceed (Allow
/Cancel) when the MSI setup is clicked upon?
Built-in admin account13 Jan 2007 01:24 GMT37
I created a standard user account to use for my daily activities thinking I
could just use run as administrator when necessary.  I was thinking that
this "best practice" might actually be more practical on Vista whereas on XP
its not possible to "run as..." on control panel apps, ...
Pseudo-Admin vs Run as Administrator?13 Jan 2007 00:53 GMT8
What's the difference between installing / running a program as the
Pseudo-Admin - and accepting UAC prompts, as opposed to launching the
process with "Run as Administrator"?
Am I right in thinking "Run as Administrator" does not actually run as
Can I turn off userid/password login screen for workgroup computers?12 Jan 2007 22:17 GMT2
I have a home LAN and am running Vista RTM on one of the boxes. Under XP,
there was no authentication required when going between computers for file
or printer sharing. Now under Vista, it is asking for a userid and password
every time one of the workgroup computers tries to get ...
Windows Firewall - Isolation mode12 Jan 2007 09:33 GMT4
From my understanding with Isolation mode set, only authenticated users (In
the same AD Forest) can access your PC.
I have created a local rule on a Vista clinet connected to a Windows 2003 AD
forest and then enabled the rule.

Vista file permission problem11 Jan 2007 22:01 GMT7
I'm trying to edit a file in a subfolder of 'Program Files' and get an
access denied error when trying to save. I'm logged in as a member of local

CreateFileMapping questions11 Jan 2007 21:09 GMT1
The question is this (in two parts):
The CreateFileMapping API call, when used to create a globally named object,
would fail when executed from non-elevated processes in early versions of
Vista. At that time the Microsoft recommendation was to call
Standard user - start Explorer as Admin doesn't work11 Jan 2007 18:35 GMT5
I have 2 users on my Vista RTM box - 1 Admin, 1 Standard.
Admin user can type Explorer into the search/run box, right click on
Windows Explorer and select Start as Administrator.  UAC pops up, I
click OK and it starts as expected.
Windows Firwall security?11 Jan 2007 18:34 GMT9
I've found Windows Firewall fascinating but I've always used other software
firewalls instead of it. I've tried the firewall in Windows Vista RC1 and it
works just fine. However, something scares the hell out of me. I installed a
torrent client called uTorrent, in this torrent ...

effective permissions10 Jan 2007 22:21 GMT2
I have noticed that the Public folder allows users Modify files created by
other users. XP only allowed to Read. So I have checked Effective Permissions
of a user and shows that users have no Permissions at all. So I suppose that
Users get the permissions from the INTERACTIVE ...
How do I delete protected registry keys/hives?10 Jan 2007 18:16 GMT5
I'm having an issue with USB devices showing up as "unknown device."  The
old WinXP solution was to delete a particular bunch of keys.  This problem is
driving me a bit nutty- I'd like to delete those keys in Vista.  Vista is
preventing me from deleting the keys though.  I try to ...
