While visiting my mom, I switched on my laptop and the message popped up "wireless network found". I discovered it is unprotected but, despite that, I could not make a connection (it was just a try, no attempt to "steal" anything). For my knowledge, why does this happen ??

I thought that NetMon used to be an optional "Windows Component" in XP Setup, but now can't find it there, and it's not listed among the Support Tools on the CD, and it's not listed in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit Tools download.
