i have a XP w/ sp2 laptop that was infected with a trojan.  when i browse 'My
Computer' and double click on a drive letter i get the 'Open With' box
prompting for a program to use for the C or D drive.  i can browse to
explorer.exe but the 'Always use the selected program....' ...

I am getting a very small windows dialogue box titled 'update' pop-up during
shutdown of my Windows XP system.
It says:

There is not even any  power through the usb ports.
