Have some old zip disks which were compressed back when I used win95/98 and

My computer w/XP Home won't boot since XP system files seem to be corrupted.  
The XP came installed on the machine so I don't have the XP CD to do a
repair.  Is there a way to get around this and not have to do a clean
install?  I'd like to save the data on the HD.

Checked the disk space used by ALL folders on my C: drive (right click on
folder | Properties) and the sum is about 10+ GB.  When I check the disk
space used by the C: drive (right click on the C: drive | Properties) , 22 GB
are used.  What could be using the other 12 GB ?
