When I do a chkdsk c: in one machine with a 160 G HDD split into 2 X 80, the C: drive keeps coming up with "chkdsk discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap" It says in order to correct this "Run chkdsk with the /F option to correct

Yep I undestand the all users folder concept. But if user1 is logged in and deletes the shortcut from his desktop it will dissapear from all users desktops. Usually just user1's desktop shortcut would be deleted. So after

when i bought my laptop from Dell xp had already been installed, there are a number of things missing ie clip art, office assistant etc. there are a few errors i have made too. i want to re install to try and get things normal again but without the cd i am told i cannot do this. ...

I have a XP sp2 system with 3 profiles on it. When a user has any icon on thier desktop and they delete it, such as a shortcut, it deletes the icon from the all users folder, which deletes it from every users desktop.

I have "C" drive being "Monitored". All other partitions are "Off". When I go to System Restore there are NO restore points EXCEPT the ones I manually made prior to installing software. Why are there no restore points being made by System Restore ?? TIA.

Fresh install of XP Pro SP2 (Retail) and no I'm being forced to login with password etc, given I'm only user on that machine I just want to boot straight into the desktop, any tips on how to do this or is tweakui the only option?

In xp sp2 when I do a search either from the start menu or from windows explorer it displays the results in details mode. The columns include status, owner, author & relevance. Which are of no relevance to me. I've tried setting the ones I want by right clicking on the column

I am thinking about upgrading to ME but I have a number of programs that I downloaded via the web. Can I save these in a backup on another hard drive or just copy them to the other hard drive and reinstall after loading the OS?

For some reason I can't get my windows background to change. When I try to set a picture as the background it acts like it has changed the background but it never does. If I right click and choose properties and desktop it will not allow me to choose a different background. ...

I have problem with logging off or shut down my pc with XP SP2. I have the last update from Microsoft too. When I gå to Start and then log off or shut down and choose to either log off or Shut down nothing happen. I have to turn off the pc by power cabel.
