Can I make XP SP2 recognise an additional external drive? Even when I uninstall the two optical drives on my desktop the system will not recognise a USB external drive. Windows Explorer assigns it a drive letter but no other part of the system will communicate with the new drive.

I have a problem with svchost.exe. Sometimes it will take 100 MB in RAM and 99% of the CPU. I asked around and people said it depends on the Automatic Update and told me to install the upgrade KB927891 and I did, but the problems still remains
