Sometimes when I try to make a new post as I click on the New Question button

The solution to this question is probably so simple and one i should know, so
i make my humble apologies now.
When i reduce a window to the taskbar it disappears and i have to open my
task manager click on the application (bring to the front) to restore it.

With win xp SP2, when I go to windows update, nothing happens.
If I try to open IE7 it opens for a fraction of a second and disappears.
If I try to download a new IE7 it tells me I alreday have it and cannot
proceed.

It seems like the screen on my Dell laptop is hard to read.  It's not as
bright as it was yesterday.  Is there a way to adjust it?

I am simply trying to run a System Recovery (NOT Restore) on my HP
