I have installed and uninstalled a lot of applications over the years. My system is starting up slower and slower. I regularly update, defragment, and let XP Home compress the old files. Is it possible that the Prefetch files are slowing system startup?

I used to be able to run chkdsk c:/f from the command line using XP Home. It would say it would run it on next boot. It worked, then XP loaded normally. Now, for some reason it wont do it anymore.
