I have Windows XP Professional service pack 2 installed. I cannot install some applications or uninstall some applications. I can't put my finger on why some and not others. The install or uninstall process starts but never finishes. What could be causing this?

I had a service hang on Windows 2003. I tried to stop it from the Services control panel but it got stuck in the "stopping" state. I found the hung process associated with the service via the task manager and killed it. However, I cannot start the process (from Services)
