video files "Thumbnail" View only works on .wmv and, .mpg files. .avi files only show the media player icon. What may be wrong?

I have loaded sp2 for windows xp. Now there is no mixer available. How do I get it back. Also I cannot restore the system past the date that sp2 was installed.
