I have been running Windows XP for about 6 months with no
problems but in the last week or so, the display on my
screen has periodically 'jumped' to a more elongated,
narrow shape, leaving large black spaces on either side,

My new computer system came with XP. I have been using W98.
With W98, about every 6 weeks or so I would do a Complete Scan and then do a
Defrag. The defrag always took a LONG time (it stayed at 10% for quite
awhile).

When I go > settings > control panel > phone and modem
options > modem tab > properties > modem > speaker volume
off: nothing changes and the modem still squacks when
