A week ago I asked if anyone knew why my windows explorer directory

I just upgraded to winxp pro. After the installation was done I had a log on
screen that came up and it had a box in the center of the screen it was about
6inches X 4 inches and had some writting inside it, and a small area to enter
my password.

Whenever my screensaver goes on or there is no hard disk activity, the disk
defrag utility runs and it is driving me crazy! Short of disabling the exe  
file (i.e. ex!), is there somewhere I can turn this annoying little creature
off?

what changes should i make to the registry such that the windows taskbar does
not show messages like "low hard disk space" and "messenger is still running
is still running" are not shown in the future.

I seem to be having a problem with my search in xp.  When I go to start
and then search it opens up but the left side (where the dog is) is
black.  I can't type in anything because I can't see anything.
