My son has an HP system with a DVD and a CD ROM.  For some reason the system
quit "seeing" both of these drives most of the time.  Sometime, however,
they appear to work, but most of the time they do not.  They are both on the

have a VB6 executable talking via serial port to an external instrument.
It works fine on a number of machines running ME and Windows95 on a old
IBM380D laptop , but fails on any newer IBM T40 running XP.

I reformatted desktop computer harddrive & reinstalled it with XP PRO. Before I did that, I saved/backup all of my important data to my external Maxtor 3000LE harddrive.

Is there a way to disable the "thumb"/"jump"/any other name usb drives on
XPPro without disabling the USB Ports entirely.  We don't want people here
to be able to just walk up plug in download and go. But we may have need to
use other USB devices, such as mice or keyboards.

Running XP Pro and 2ghz machine.
Just noticed I have two CD/DVD roms listed.  I only have one a
Toshiba.
But a AXV CD SCSI drive is listed.  I took it out in Device Manager
