I need a microphone that I can plug into my laptop and record a room full of
people hold a workshop. I have tried one or two but they fail to get enough
volume to hear everything.
Has anyone been successful in doning this, if so which mic can you suggest.

Mouse will still work, so I can close applications, save work, and
restart.
A shut down to standby won't work.  Keyboard still frozen upon restart.
No errors listed in event viewer.
