My modem reports an error that another application is using the COM port 3 even when no other applications are running. I looked at the device manager to switch the modem to a differnt COM port but no COM or LPT ports are listed at all.

I have a laptop with a dial-up connection. It connects at one phone location in our neighborhood. However, it will NOT connect at the home phone. We have tried two other laptops (friends) and they both connect while hooked up to the phone line. However, my modem will not connect.
