I have a Dell desktop computer & a Toshiba LapTop.
My Dell desktop has a Optical DVD-ROM (OptiPlex - GX620)
The LapTop has a regular DVD  -R/RW  player.

I'm running XP Home, NTSF, SP2 on a machine with an AMD 2500+ processor,
Gigabyte of RAM and a Maxtor 40 gig hd. Recently I've had occasion to find
the machine had crashed, attempted to reboot and hung unable to detect the C:
drive.

I am trying to copy files from a desktop computer to the hard drive of a
LapTop.
No network is available so facilitate the transfer. Both computers have
accessible USB ports.

I've seen lots of help for people who have problems with their USB
ports all the time but my problem is that I can plug things in when the
computer is off or in Linux, just not when Windows is already booted
up.  I've looked for updated drivers for my mobo and general Windows

I know I've got 1gb (two 512mb) of memory in my desktop.  Short of opening
