The '"safely remove hardware" icon is in my system tray and when I click on it it lists my hard drive as being safe to remove. I have just one HDD which is plugged into the SATA 1 port on the mobo. How do I get Windows to NOT show the "safely remove hardware" icon?

I have a ATAPI Dual Layer 16X4X12 DVD burner It no longer will burn DVD's I have tried with Nero, Roxio and Cheetah. I get the same type of error message every time.

I have five USB ports on my computer and all of a sudden they have all stopped working, even my mouse does not work. I have been into device manager and they state they are all working correctly. Any help would be appreciated.
