I copied my data files to a DVD-RW using Vista Home Premium. I then installed XP but it didn't read the data that was copied there by Vista. This prompted me to reinstall Vista. How can I copy this data using Vista and be assured that XP will read it

The cable modem has one outlet. I unplug the desktop and plug it into the laptop with the same configuration + firewall off but it wont connect to the internet. Any suggestions? Thanks John
