Is it necessary to have windows messenger and if it isn't

I was just wondering if anybody knows how msn messenger installs on your
computer? Does it overwrite the old version of 4.7?
If it doesn't overwrite it, is there an easy way to uninstall 4.7 so to
appear like it wasn't there?

Everytime I open my msn messenger 6.0 it askes me to
update to 6.1 but it will not work say failed every time
then askes me to go the msn messenger web site and down
load from there and when i do i get an error "1601". Does

on one computer using two different messengers and two
different .net passports but now for some reason only the
